Bruce Gilden
Bruce Gilden is an American street photographer and photojournalist. He his best known for his close up photos of people on the street taken in black white. He has done several different projects using the flash, These projects include "only God can judge me" and "Fram Boys and Gram Girls", which are both still on going projects. He uses Flash to make certain features of people stand out.
Magnum photos has called him "One of the most iconic street photographers of our time".

In this project Bruce had been photographing shoppers wearing face-masks during the pandemic in New York. This project of his stood out to me because of his use of flash. His use of flash stands out to me as in all of his photos it makes the people pop out on the background which looks darker. Your are able to see evidence of the use of flash in the eyes and any think that they are holding. I think that the photographer has purposely made the eyes stand out to give the people in the photo more of an identity as all you can see on their face is the eyes.
In this project he would ask people if he could take a photo of them. This would be based on face-masks and if he found them interesting enough to photograph. He found this project interesting because you aren't able to make out who the people in the photographs are, just that they are getting food and wearing face masks. He finds the masks are important to the photo because it adds a story to the photo.
This project had been different to all of his other work because he had to adapt his work so that he could do a new style of photos. This includes working in colour as he had been working black and white for most of his career as a photographer and hadn't used big cameras, however over the time of his career he had adapted his style to the shoot. This includes changing what he had been photographing as he a large period where he had only been taking street photos.
