Basics of Sound

1. Set your levels on all your devices manually

2. Use a microphone

3. Use headphones

4. Use redundant audio (or double system sound) – this is for backup in case theres a problem with the sound

- Set your manual levels to -12db and get your microphone close to the subject.

- Check the room tone, leave microphone where the interviewee where will be and record. Should be about 2 mins long. (This is very imprint, do on the day right before or right after).

- Always name microphone sound, LAV mic

- The closer your mic is to the subject, the better

Directional microphone – will pick up anything that it is pointed out, used for a single subject where they are the primary focus.

Omni Directional – use in unpredictable circumstances, when you have multiple subjects, ambient noise isn’t a problem.

For my videos i will be using the natural sound of the runners trainer, this will be talking and footsteps as well as the talking in the main interviews which i will use an LAV microphone to record and capture the sound. This will help me to build up my video and interview skills for any future work that my require me knowing how to do these things.

Camera Angles and Time-lapse

- Tight shot

- Extreme closeup

- Medium shot

- Long shot

- Wide shot

- High angle

- Low angle

- Over the shoulder

- POV shot

- Cutaway shot

Change angles by 20 degrees and don’t have same shots by each other (eg don’t have a wide shot going in to another wide shot)

Keep interviewee in their own area to keep them comfortable.

Dip from black at start and dip to black at end.

Time-lapse:

· Can be used as a transition for change of time or place.

· Shoot manually (exposure, focus and white balance).

· If the whole video is time-lapse then shoot raw otherwise shoot in JPEG

· It will either be built in into the camera or you will have to get an intervalometer

· Large memory cards

· Extra Batteries

· Tripod

· Focus on a static object in the frame
